Although People of Color currently comprise approximately 15 percent of the American Jewish population, the institutional Jewish community is often assumed (and assumes itself) to be all white. This allows racism and insularity to fester. To build a fuller Jewish culture of inclusion and equity, a small group of funders launched the Jews of Color Initiative in 2016, which re-grants funds to support projects, organizations, and professional development for Jewish leaders of color, while also working with predominantly white Jewish institutions to create a communal paradigm shift regarding American Jews’ multiracial reality. Five years in, the Initiative has become a leading voice on racial progress in the Jewish community and is bringing visibility and support to the growing population of Jews of Color.
